VIP Peptide (Vasoactive Intestinal Peptide)

is a naturally occurring 28-amino-acid hormone and neuropeptide. It is widely distributed throughout the body, including the gut, pancreas, heart, lungs, and brain, where it acts as a potent vasodilator and immune regulator. 

Key Functions and Mechanisms

VIP interacts with specific G-protein-coupled receptors (VPAC1and VPAC2) to mediate several vital physiological processes: 

• Vasodilation: It relaxes smooth muscles in blood vessels, lowering arterial blood pressure and increasing blood flow to organs like the heart and intestines.
• Digestive Regulation: It relaxes smooth muscles in the oesophagus, stomach, and gallbladder while stimulating the secretion of water and electrolytes into pancreatic juice and bile.
• Immune Modulation: VIP is a potent anti-inflammatory agent that inhibits the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines (e.g., TNF-α, IL-6) and promotes the production of anti-inflammatory ones (e.g., IL-10).

• Respiratory Health: It is being researched for treating pulmonary hypertension and asthma due to its ability to relax airway smooth muscle and improve oxygenation.
