MELANOTAN II [ MT-2] 10mg
(NOT FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION RESEARCH USE ONLY)
Melanotan II (MT-2) 10mg
is a synthetic hormone analogue that stimulates melanin production for skin tanning and affects sexual function and appetite. It is not approved by most health regulatory bodies (e.g., FDA, MHRA, TGA) for general human use due to significant safety concerns and lack of long-term testing.
Primary Uses
MT-2 was originally developed for medical purposes, but its primary off-label use is cosmetic tanning.
- Skin Tanning: MT-2 promotes melanogenesis (melanin production) by activating melanocortin 1 receptors (MC1R) in the skin, leading to a darker complexion. Users often report achieving a tan with reduced or minimal UV exposure.
- Erectile Dysfunction (ED): During clinical trials, MT-2 was found to be a potent initiator of erections by activating MC4 receptors in the brain. A related drug, bremelanotide, was later developed and approved for female hypoactive sexual desire disorder based on this mechanism.
- Appetite Suppression: Activation of MC3R and MC4R can lead to a reduced appetite and weight loss, an effect sometimes sought after by users.
Significant Risks and Side Effects
Health agencies worldwide advise against the use of MT-2 due to a range of potential side effects, from common, transient issues to rare, serious health conditions. Unregulated online sources also pose risks of product impurity and contamination.
Common Short-Term Side Effects:
- Gastrointestinal issues: Nausea and vomiting are the most frequently reported side effects.
- Skin changes: Darkening of existing moles and freckles is common and reversible.
- Other effects: Facial flushing, decreased appetite, tiredness, stretching, yawning, and spontaneous penile erections in men.
Potential Long-Term and Serious Risks:
- Melanoma Risk: There are concerns that MT-2 may increase the risk of melanoma (a serious form of skin cancer), particularly when used with heavy sunbed or UV exposure. The drug stimulates pigment cells, which could potentially cause abnormal cell proliferation.
- Organ Damage: Rare, but potentially fatal, cases of rhabdomyolysis (muscle cell breakdown) and renal (kidney) infarction have been reported in association with MT-2 use.
- Cardiovascular Strain: Some users have reported increased blood pressure and heart rate.
- Contamination/Infection Risks: Unregulated products bought online may have variable doses or be contaminated. Furthermore, if administered via injection, there is a risk of transmitting blood-borne diseases through needle sharing or unsafe practices.
